hey {{first_name | friend}},

You wake up around 2am with that familiar burn in your chest, already blaming whatever you ate too close to bedtime again. Same kind of dinner a few nights later, different position, and this time nothing burns at all.

Turns out which side you're lying on might matter more than what you actually ate. Research tracking acid levels overnight found people sleeping on their right side had significantly more acid exposure than people sleeping on their left, with no change to their diet or medication at all. One clinical study following GERD patients found switching sides alone produced measurable relief, nothing else changed.

This isn't really about sleep position specifically, it's about gravity working with your anatomy instead of against it. Your stomach sits slightly left of center, and the valve connecting it to your esophagus sits on the stomach's right side. Lie on your left, and gravity naturally pulls acid away from that valve, keeping it doing its job properly. Lie on your right, and acid pools right up against it instead, making it far easier to slip through.

The same underlying principle shows up in a couple of other places people already unknowingly use. Propping your head up with an extra pillow helps some people for exactly this reason, gravity pulling things downward instead of letting them sit level. Staying upright for a couple hours after a big meal works the same way too, before you've even gotten near a bed. None of these actually change what's sitting in your stomach, they just change which direction gravity happens to be pulling it.

Some people find simply switching to their left side, or propping the head of the bed up slightly, makes a real, noticeable difference within just a few nights, without touching a single thing about what they had for dinner.

If switching sides has ever changed how your night actually felt, hit reply and tell me, I'm curious how many of you have already stumbled onto this by accident.
