hey {{first_name | friend}},

You sip warm water after meals because you've heard it helps digestion, meanwhile steering clear of anything cold since that's supposed to be harder on your stomach. Nobody ever mentioned there might be a real tradeoff either way, not just a right answer and a wrong one.

I picked up the warm water habit from a relative years ago, convinced I was doing my gut a favor every single time. It never once occurred to me to question whether faster digestion was actually the thing I should be aiming for in the first place.

Turns out the cold water part isn't really true at all, your stomach warms any drink back up to body temperature within about five minutes no matter how it started out, cold or otherwise. The warm water habit, though, does something genuinely real, just maybe not quite what you'd expect it to do.

This isn't really about picking the "right" temperature, it's about realizing faster digestion isn't automatically the goal most people quietly assume it is. Research specifically studying older adults found warm drinks around 55 to 60 degrees genuinely sped up how quickly the stomach emptied, noticeably more than cold or body-temperature drinks did in that same study.

That same research found something else worth knowing though, the faster emptying was directly linked to feeling hungry again sooner afterward, not just digesting more efficiently the way you might hope it would. It's the same underlying pattern that shows up whenever something speeds up one part of a process without necessarily improving the actual outcome you care about. Faster isn't automatically better, sometimes it's just faster.

Some people find sticking with whatever temperature they actually enjoy day to day, rather than forcing warm water specifically for a digestive benefit that's more modest than it's usually made out to be, works just as well in practice. If managing hunger between meals matters more to you than raw digestion speed on its own, a cooler drink might genuinely suit that particular goal better than the warm one ever did.

If you've ever forced yourself to drink warm water specifically for digestion, hit reply and tell me, I'm curious how many of you picked up that exact habit the same way I did.
